How to identify this edition

Agatha Christie's first novel was Penguin no. 6, one of the ten books published on 30 July 1935. It is often listed as no. 10, but no. 10 was Compton Mackenzie's Carnival. The Penguin edition is not the first edition of the text, which Bodley Head published in 1921, but the 1935 no. 6 is one of the rarest early Penguins.

The reason is a rights problem. Penguin reprinted Styles twice in 1935 and then withdrew it, putting The Murder on the Links in its place as no. 6A. Styles returned in 1936 as no. 61, which is common. So the first thing to check is the number.

What to check:

  • Number: 6, not 61.
  • Back cover: the list of the first ten titles gives no. 2 as Farewell to Arms, without the A.
  • Front cover: green for crime, with The Bodley Head named on it.
  • Dust wrapper: printed, with the 6d price on the front.

Collectors also tell the two issues apart by how the title is broken across lines on the cover. A 1985 facsimile set includes a Styles without a jacket that follows the no. 61 layout.
