How to identify this edition

Diamonds Are Forever was published by Jonathan Cape on 26 March 1956. It was the first Bond novel in a pictorial jacket, by Pat Marriott, and the first issue jacket is priced 12s 6d.

What to check:

  • Binding: black, spine lettered in silver, with a diamond pattern embossed on the upper board and a diamond stamped in silver.
  • Jacket: Pat Marriott's pictorial design, priced 12s 6d.
  • First issue jacket: the front flap blurb ends more hazardous than Moonraker? Yes.

A second impression appeared in 1958. Dealers also refer to two bindings, A and B, but they disagree about the difference, so we have not used it here.

Beware the First Edition Library facsimiles, which copy the binding, text and jacket, and modern facsimile jackets put on genuine books. With every Fleming first, ask whether the jacket is unclipped and belongs to the impression, because married jackets are common.
