How to identify this edition

Moonraker was published by Jonathan Cape in April 1955, bound in black cloth lettered in silver, in Kenneth Lewis's flame jacket priced 10s 6d. The famous point is on page 10, line 31, which reads either shoo or shoot.

What to check:

  • Page 10, line 31: shoo (a misprint) or shoot. Copies reading shoo are on thinner paper and bulk about 15mm; shoot copies bulk about 19mm.
  • Binding: black cloth lettered in silver on the spine and upper board.
  • Jacket: Kenneth Lewis's flames, priced 10s 6d.

Both readings belong to the first impression. Dealers and bibliographers disagree about which came first, so we list them as two states without priority. In practice shoo copies sell at a premium. The flame artwork was reused on later jackets into the 1970s, and faded flames cut value sharply.

Beware the First Edition Library facsimiles, which copy the binding, text and jacket, and modern facsimile jackets put on genuine books. With every Fleming first, ask whether the jacket is unclipped and belongs to the impression, because married jackets are common.

Traps and later printings: The same flame jacket artwork was reused into the 1970s, so check the book. Faded flames reduce value a great deal. The First Edition Library facsimile set copies the bindings, text and jackets; modern facsimile jackets are also often put on genuine books. Check that the jacket is unclipped and belongs to the impression.

Both readings belong to the first impression and dealers disagree on which came first, so neither is given priority here. Copies reading shoo usually sell at a premium.
Both readings belong to the first impression. Gilbert originally gave shoo priority and Sotheby's and most dealers follow him; Shapero reports Gilbert later suggested shoo arose part-way through the run, and Maggs's state lettering differs. Shoo copies usually command a premium. 9,900 is the figure for the whole first impression.
