How to identify this edition

The first edition of The Colour of Magic was published by Colin Smythe on 24 November 1983 in an edition of about 506 copies, of which around 400 went to libraries. That makes it one of the scarcest modern first editions, and most surviving copies are ex-library.

What to check:

  • Binding: green cloth with the spine lettered in gilt.
  • Jacket: designed by Alan Smith. If your jacket shows Josh Kirby's familiar Discworld artwork, you have the 1989 second edition or a later book.
  • ISBN: 0 86140 089 5.

The jacket comes in two states. In the first, the original front flap blurb is printed and left uncovered. Only a handful of these survive. In the second, which is the usual state, a printed label is pasted over that blurb. The book inside is the same in both.

Facsimiles are the main trap. An unauthorised facsimile from 2005 reproduces both jackets and is slightly taller than the original, about 21.5 cm against 20.9 cm, so measure any copy that looks too good. An official facsimile also exists. Neither is a first edition.

Ex-library copies are the norm, so expect stamps, pockets and plastic jacket covers. A copy that never went to a library is a rare thing and is priced accordingly.
