  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The first printing is told from later ones by 1 point of issue listed below.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

The fourth Discworld novel was first published in November 1987 (Wikipedia gives 12 November) as a Demy octavo hardback of 221 pages under the joint imprint of Victor Gollancz and Colin Smythe, ISBN 0 575 04171 4. Colin Smythe gives the first printing as 3,950 copies. The jacket has Josh Kirby's cover painting; ISFDB gives the price as £10.95. The boards are black cloth with the title in gilt on the spine. The joint imprint was kept for the first four printings, so it does not on its own prove a first printing; check the copyright page for a reprint line. Later reprints name Gollancz alone. Later formats include the 1995 Compact edition, a larger 9 by 6 inch hardback reissue of 1996 (ISBN 0 575 06408 0) and the BCA Unseen Library book club issue of 2002.
