Methuen issued The House at Pooh Corner in a large paper edition of 350 numbered copies on handmade paper, signed by A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard, alongside the 1928 trade edition.
What to check:
- Limitation: a numbered limitation statement with both signatures.
- Paper: handmade paper, with larger pages than the trade edition.
- Binding: cloth-backed boards with a printed label.
Signed limited issues like this are among the most sought-after Pooh books, and condition matters a great deal. Look for sunning to the boards and label, wear at the spine ends and foxing to the handmade paper, which marks easily.
Check both signatures and the number against the limitation statement. A copy offered with only one signature, or with the limitation leaf missing, is not complete.
A separate issue of about 20 copies on Japon paper bound in vellum is also recorded, though we have only one source for it so far. Together the large paper and vellum issues make a matching pair with the Winnie-the-Pooh large paper edition of 1926, and complete pairs are what many collectors aim for.
