How to identify this edition

Alongside the 1926 trade edition, Methuen issued Winnie-the-Pooh in a large paper edition of 350 numbered copies printed on handmade paper and signed by both A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard.

What to check:

  • Limitation: a numbered limitation statement, signed by author and illustrator.
  • Paper: handmade paper, with a larger page than the trade edition.
  • Binding: quarter blue cloth with light blue paper boards and a paper label, in a printed jacket.
  • Map: a folding map.

Because each copy is numbered and signed, provenance is usually easier to establish than for a trade copy, but check that both signatures are present and that the number matches the limitation. Copies without their printed jacket, or with sunned paper boards, are worth noticeably less.

A smaller issue of about 20 copies on vellum is reported, but we have not yet confirmed its details. The large paper copies pair naturally with the 1928 large paper House at Pooh Corner.
