How to identify this edition

Thunderball was published by Jonathan Cape on 27 March 1961, bound in black boards with a skeletal hand blind-stamped on the upper board, in Richard Chopping's jacket priced 15s.

What to check:

  • Binding: black boards with a skeletal hand blind-stamped on the upper board.
  • Jacket: Richard Chopping's design, priced 15s.

The first printing was large, so condition and the jacket drive value. Grade the jacket separately from the book: a bright, unclipped jacket with an unfaded spine panel is the benchmark. Reports that later printings carry a screen treatment credit on the title page have not yet been confirmed, so check the copyright page as well.

Beware the First Edition Library facsimiles, which copy the binding, text and jacket, and modern facsimile jackets put on genuine books. With every Fleming first, ask whether the jacket is unclipped and belongs to the impression, because married jackets are common.

Traps and later printings: Any copy whose title page adds a screen treatment credit to Kevin McClory and others is a later printing. The First Edition Library facsimile set copies the bindings, text and jackets; modern facsimile jackets are also often put on genuine books. Check that the jacket is unclipped and belongs to the impression.
