Lemony Snicket

Lemony Snicket is the pen name of Daniel Handler (born 1970), an American writer who wrote A Series of Unfortunate Events, 13 novels for children published between 1999 and 2006.

Handler was born on 28 February 1970 in San Francisco. Under his own name he published the adult novel The Basic Eight in the late 1990s. As Lemony Snicket he began A Series of Unfortunate Events with The Bad Beginning on 30 September 1999. Two books appeared that year and three in 2000, and the series ended with The End on 13 October 2006. The illustrations and covers were by Brett Helquist. The series has been translated into 41 languages and had sold at least 65 million copies by 2015. It was filmed in 2004 and adapted by Netflix as a television series that ran from 2017 to 2019. He returned to the Snicket name for All the Wrong Questions, a four-book series published from 2012 to 2015.

For collectors. The first edition of The Bad Beginning was published by HarperCollins in the United States on 30 September 1999, illustrated by Brett Helquist. HarperCollins published all 13 books; in the UK, Egmont issued collectors' and limited editions of The Bad Beginning in 2003, so check the publisher and date before treating a copy as a first.
