Who is responsible for your data
MyVolumes runs myvolumes.com and is the controller of the personal data described here under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). Contact us at hello@myvolumes.com.
If you just browse
You can read every public page without an account. We do not use analytics or advertising trackers. Like any website, our server records each request (your IP address, the page, the time and your browser's description of itself) to keep the site running and secure, for example to block automated attacks. Web server logs are deleted after 14 days and application logs after one month.
We count how often each book page is viewed, as a plain number per page per day, so we can see which books people look for. These counts do not identify you.
If you create an account
We store:
- Your account: username, email address and your password, which is stored only as a secure hash that we cannot read.
- Your settings: display name, theme, default grades and notification choices.
- Your collection and wantlist: the books you add, their grades and notes, and, if you choose to enter them, what you paid, where from and any photographs you upload.
- Reviews you write, which appear publicly with your display name once approved.
- Requests you send us to add a book.
Your collection is private unless you choose to make it public in Settings. We use this data to run your account and show you your collection, and we never sell it or share it for marketing.
Our legal reasons
- To provide the service you signed up for (contract): your account, collection, wantlist and reviews.
- Legitimate interests: keeping the site secure, preventing abuse and understanding which pages are useful, in ways that do not identify you.
- Consent: optional emails such as price alerts, which you can switch off in Settings at any time.
Cookies
We use only cookies the site needs or that remember a choice you made:
- sessionid: keeps you signed in. Set when you log in.
- csrftoken: protects forms such as log in and sign up from forgery.
- mv_theme: remembers the light or dark theme you picked. Set only if you change it.
There are no analytics, advertising or social media cookies, so there is nothing to consent to beyond these.
Other services
- Videos in our guides come from YouTube. Nothing loads from YouTube until you press play; then the video plays from YouTube's privacy-enhanced domain (youtube-nocookie.com) under Google's privacy policy.
- Bookseller links (AbeBooks, eBay, Amazon) take you to those sites, which have their own privacy policies and cookies. Some of these links earn us a commission.
- Hosting: the site and its database run on a server we rent from OVHcloud.
- Email: when we email you, for example to confirm your address, the message goes through an email delivery provider acting on our behalf.
How long we keep it
Account data is kept while your account is open. When you delete your account, your profile, collection, wantlist, shelves and reviews are deleted straight away. Any copy held in a server backup is deleted when that backup expires.
Your rights
You can see, correct, download or delete your data. Most of this you can do yourself in Settings: "Privacy and data" lets you download everything we hold about you or delete your account. You can also object to how we use your data or ask us to restrict it by emailing hello@myvolumes.com. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
MyVolumes is not aimed at children, and you must be 13 or older to create an account.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will say so on this page and, for members, by email.
