Margaret Weis

Margaret Weis (born 16 March 1948 in Independence, Missouri) is an American fantasy and science fiction writer who, with Tracy Hickman, co-created the Dragonlance novels that began with Dragons of Autumn Twilight in 1984.

Weis graduated in creative writing and literature from the University of Missouri in 1970. In 1983 she joined TSR, the publisher of Dungeons & Dragons, as a book editor, and there she and Hickman wrote the first Dragonlance novels as tie-ins to the game. She left TSR in 1986 to write independently.

TSR published Dragons of Autumn Twilight as a paperback in November 1984, the first of the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy, and the Dragonlance Legends trilogy followed in 1986. Weis and Hickman then moved to Bantam Books for the Darksword trilogy (1986 to 1987) and the seven-volume Death Gate Cycle, from Dragon Wing (1990) to The Seventh Gate (1994), with Fire Sea published in 1991. On her own she wrote the science fiction Star of the Guardians series for Bantam Spectra, starting with The Lost King (1990). In 2004 she founded Margaret Weis Productions, which published role-playing games including Serenity and Battlestar Galactica.

For collectors

The TSR first printing of Dragons of Autumn Twilight (November 1984) is the foundation of any Dragonlance collection, and the Chronicles and Legends trilogies in their original TSR paperbacks are the core early books. Weis continues to sell signed copies of the Dragonlance omnibus editions through her own website.
