About Arthur Dorros
Arthur Dorros (born 1950) is an American writer and illustrator of children's books, known for the picture book Abuela and for science titles he wrote, such as Ant Cities (1987) and Feel the Wind (1989).
Dorros was born in Washington, D.C., attended Pacific Oaks College and graduated from the University of Wisconsin. Before turning to books in his thirties he worked as a carpenter, cook, draughtsman, photographer and teacher, and he learned Spanish while travelling in Latin America, which shaped several of his bilingual stories. He has lived in Seattle.
Ant Cities and Feel the Wind belong to the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series, and he also illustrated the 1986 revision of Franklyn Branley's What Makes Day and Night? in the same series. His Spanish-inflected books include Abuela, an ALA Notable Book, Abuelo, Julio's Magic, a CLASP Americas Award commended title, and Papá and Me, a Pura Belpré Honor book. He has also written Animals Talk and the teenage novel Under the Sun. His work has received Orbis Pictus and Parents' Choice recognition.
For collectors: The Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series was first published by Crowell and is now a HarperCollins series. His titles in it date from 1986 to 1989.
