About Brian Selznick

Brian Selznick (born 14 July 1966) is an American illustrator and author from New Jersey, best known for The Invention of Hugo Cabret (2007), which won the 2008 Caldecott Medal, and for illustrating Andrew Clements's Frindle (1996).

Selznick grew up in East Brunswick, New Jersey, and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, intending to design for the theatre. While working at Eeyore's Books for Children in Manhattan he published his first book, The Houdini Box (Knopf, 1991). He went on to illustrate novels and picture books by other writers: Frindle (1996) and Lunch Money (2005) by Andrew Clements, Riding Freedom (1998) and When Marian Sang (2002) by Pam Muñoz Ryan, The Doll People (2000) and The Meanest Doll in the World (2003) by Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin, and The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins (2001) by Barbara Kerley, which earned a Caldecott Honor in 2002.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret runs to 533 pages with 284 pictures and was the first long book to win the Caldecott Medal; Martin Scorsese filmed it as Hugo (2011). Wonderstruck (2011), The Marvels (2015), Kaleidoscope (2021) and Big Tree (2023) followed. He also drew the covers for Scholastic's 20th anniversary editions of the Harry Potter novels.

For collectors

Selznick's drawings appear in the 1996 first edition of Frindle (Wikipedia's infobox names Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, though its text mentions Aladdin Paperbacks) and in the first editions of Riding Freedom (1998), Lunch Money (2005) and The Meanest Doll in the World (2003), as well as in his own novels beginning with The Invention of Hugo Cabret (2007).
