About Hodges Soileau

Hodges Soileau is a painter and former book-cover illustrator, now based in Florida, whose painted covers appeared on Boxcar Children mysteries and other children's series around the turn of the 2000s. His birth date is not given in the sources we checked.

Soileau began freelancing in 1971 and spent roughly 25 to 28 years in commercial illustration (his own accounts give both figures), producing more than 300 book covers for most of the large New York publishing houses, Bantam and Harlequin's romance list among them. His jobs also took in magazine editorial work and car and film advertising. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York for 23 years, painted the image for its 29th call for entries and chaired its 35th annual exhibition.

From the mid-1980s he moved gradually towards fine art, painting his last commercial cover in 1999. He became a Signature member of Oil Painters of America in December 2008 and has won awards from that body and from the Portrait Society of America. He lives in Venice, Florida, with his wife, Marilyn.

For collectors: Open Library credits him on Boxcar Children titles first published between 2000 and 2004, including The Copycat Mystery, The Stuffed Bear Mystery, The Comic Book Mystery, The Ice Cream Mystery and The Mystery of the Haunted Boxcar. He names The Finders Keepers Mystery (Boxcar Children no. 98) and Baby-Sitters Club no. 77, Dawn and Whitney, Friends Forever, among his covers.
