About S.D. Schindler
S. D. Schindler (born 1952) is an American illustrator known for his drawings for Ursula K. Le Guin's Catwings books, beginning with Catwings (1988), and for many picture books about nature and history.
Steven D. Schindler was born on 27 September 1952 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he grew up, and studied biology at the University of Pennsylvania. His first published book was Phyllis Krasilovsky's The First Tulips in Holland (Doubleday, 1982), which won a Parents' Choice Award for illustration.
For Le Guin he illustrated all four Catwings stories: Catwings (1988), Catwings Return (1989), Wonderful Alexander and the Catwings (1994) and Jane on Her Own (1999), the first published by Orchard Books. For Erica Silverman he drew Big Pumpkin (1992), a Halloween take on the cumulative turnip tale that Kirkus Reviews praised for monsters "just scary enough to be fun", and Don't Fidget a Feather! (1994). Other titles include April Pulley Sayre's If You Should Hear a Honey Guide (1995), Kathleen V. Kudlinski's Boy, Were We Wrong About Dinosaurs! (2005), Alan Armstrong's Whittington (2005), Mark Kurlansky's The Story of Salt (2006) and Jacqueline Davies's Tricking the Tallyman (2009).
