About HarperTrophy

HarperTrophy is a children's imprint of HarperCollins, used for editions of established American children's books by authors such as Laura Ingalls Wilder, Beverly Cleary, Seymour Simon, Dan Gutman and Aliki.

The imprint belongs to the Harper children's tradition. Harper began in New York in 1817 as J & J Harper, became Harper & Brothers in 1833 and Harper & Row in 1962, and was bought by News Corp in 1987; in 1989 it was merged with the Glasgow publisher William Collins to form HarperCollins. Under Ursula Nordstrom, who ran it from 1940 to 1973, the Harper children's department published Goodnight Moon, Where the Wild Things Are, Charlotte's Web and Harold and the Purple Crayon.

Open Library records about 2,500 works under the HarperTrophy name, mostly children's and juvenile fiction, with Wilder, Cleary, Simon, Gutman and Aliki the most frequent authors. Some HarperTrophy titles first appeared under other Harper names: Jean Craighead George's Julie of the Wolves, for example, was first published by Harper & Row in 1972 and won the 1973 Newbery Medal, so a HarperTrophy copy is a later edition rather than a first. HarperCollins's own imprint listings are inconsistent about whether HarperTrophy is still an active name.
