About Hyperion
Hyperion was the New York adult book publisher that the Walt Disney Company founded in 1990 and sold to Hachette Book Group in 2013, after which it was renamed Hachette Books.
Disney set Hyperion up from scratch, with no backlist, under chief executive Michael Eisner and Robert S. Miller, aiming to make use of Disney's talent and products. The name comes from Hyperion Avenue in Los Angeles, where the Walt Disney Studios stood before 1939. Its first book, Amazing Grace, appeared on 26 September 1991. The list covered fiction, biography, cookery, travel and sport, and from 1999 its Disney-themed adult books appeared under the Disney Editions imprint.
Tim Allen's Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man (1994) was an early hit. Later best sellers included Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Randy Pausch's The Last Lecture and Michael J. Fox's Always Looking Up.
On 28 June 2013 Disney announced the sale of Hyperion's adult list, more than 1,000 backlist titles plus 25 forthcoming books, to Hachette Book Group, which completed the purchase in July 2013. Hachette renamed the imprint Hachette Books on 12 March 2014. Disney kept its media tie-in titles, such as the books linked to the ABC series Castle, and its children's imprints, which continue as Disney-Hyperion.
