About Pan Macmillan Australia Pty
Pan Macmillan Australia is the Australian branch of the British publisher Pan Macmillan. It publishes under five imprints: Macmillan, Pan, Picador, Plum and Macquarie Dictionary Publishers.
Both parent names go back a long way in Britain. The brothers Daniel and Alexander Macmillan founded Macmillan in 1843. Alan Bott, a former First World War flying ace, set up Pan Books in 1944, and Macmillan took full ownership of Pan in 1987. Macmillan Publishers belongs to the German Holtzbrinck family through Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck. Pan Macmillan has offices in the UK, Australia, South Africa and India. As well as its own lists, the Australian company handles Australian and New Zealand sales of Guinness World Records books.
In Australia it first published Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton's The 13-Storey Treehouse (2011) and Jane Harper's novels The Dry (2016), Force of Nature (2017) and The Lost Man (2018). Its Picador imprint issued Behrouz Boochani's No Friend But the Mountains (2018), which Omid Tofighian translated from Persian and which won the Victorian Prize for Literature in 2019.
