About Fern Michaels

Fern Michaels (1933-2025) was the pen name of Mary Ruth Kuczkir, an American author of romance and suspense novels who wrote more than 200 books, including the long-running Sisterhood series.

She was born Mary Ruth Koval on 9 April 1933 in Hastings, Pennsylvania. Fern Michaels began as a joint pseudonym she shared with her writing partner Roberta Anderson; their first novel, Pride and Passion, appeared in 1975, and by 1978 the pair had a three-year contract with Ballantine Books. In 1989 she became the sole author behind the name and took it on as her public identity.

Her early books were historical romances such as Vixen in Velvet (1976), Captive Passions (1977) and Valentina (1978). The Texas novels followed: Texas Rich (1985), Texas Heat (1986), Texas Fury (1989) and Texas Sunrise (1993). Her best-known creation is the Sisterhood series, which began with Weekend Warriors in 2003 and reached 37 numbered novels by Code Blue in 2025. Publishers Lunch reported sales of an estimated 150 million copies worldwide. She died at her home in Summerville, South Carolina, on 12 November 2025, aged 92.

For collectors. Open Library records Ballantine Books editions of Pride and Passion, Vixen in Velvet, Captive Passions and Valentina, the publisher behind her 1970s books. Open Library also lists later hardback reissues of the early novels by Severn House and large-print editions from G.K. Hall and Center Point, which should not be mistaken for the originals. The first book of the Sisterhood, Weekend Warriors (2003), is the natural starting point for series collectors.
