About Graham Greene

Graham Greene (1904-1991) was an English novelist, short-story writer and screenwriter whose novels include Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory and The Quiet American, and who wrote the screenplay for The Third Man. He was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, on 2 October 1904 and died in Corseaux, Switzerland, on 3 April 1991.

Educated at Berkhamsted School and Balliol College, Oxford, he worked on the Nottingham Journal and then as a sub-editor at The Times. His first novel, The Man Within, came out in 1929. His major novels include Brighton Rock (1938), The Power and the Glory (1940), which won the Hawthornden Prize in 1941, The Heart of the Matter (1948), The End of the Affair (1951), The Quiet American (1955) and Our Man in Havana (1958). He wrote the screenplay for Carol Reed's film The Third Man (1949), publishing the novella in 1950. During the Second World War he served with MI6 from 1941 to 1944, including a posting to Sierra Leone. He was also a publishing director at Eyre & Spottiswoode and later The Bodley Head. He was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times but never won.

For collectors, Brighton Rock has a twist: Viking in New York published it a month ahead of the British edition from Heinemann, so the American printing (Miller 17a) is the true first and the Heinemann is the first UK edition. Heinemann was also the London publisher of The Power and the Glory. The Power and the Glory first appeared in the United States under the title The Labyrinthine Ways.
