About Jill MacLean

Jill MacLean (born 1941) is an English-born Canadian writer who has published more than 70 romance novels for Harlequin under pen names, chiefly Sandra Field, and children's novels under her own name.

Born in England, she moved to Nova Scotia with her family in 1950 and lives in Bedford, Nova Scotia. She graduated in science with honours from Dalhousie University and worked at the Fisheries Research Board, the pathology laboratory of Sydney City Hospital and the biology department of Mount Allison University, later taking a Master's in Theological Studies at the Atlantic School of Theology.

Her first romance was published in 1974. As Sandra Field her earliest listed title is To Trust My Love (Harlequin Romance no. 1870, April 1975); later books include The Storms of Spring and Sight of a Stranger (Harlequin Romance, 1982), The Tides of Summer (1983), Out of Wedlock (Harlequin Presents no. 799, 1985) and An Ideal Match (Presents no. 977, 1987). She also wrote as Jocelyn Haley, and Wikipedia describes Jan MacLean as a name she shared with other Maritime writers; six Harlequin novels appeared under it, starting with To Begin Again (1978).

Under her own name she wrote The Nine Lives of Travis Keating (2008) and its sequel The Present Tense of Prinny Murphy (2009), followed by Home Truths (Dancing Cat Books, 2010), Nix Minus One (Pajama Press, 2013) and The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden (2013). She has won the Ann Connor Brimer Award for Children's Literature, and Prinny Murphy won at the 2010 Atlantic Book Awards. She has also published poetry, The Brevity of Red (2003), and a historical biography, Jean Pierre Roma (1977).

For collectors. Her romances carry the Sandra Field, Jocelyn Haley or shared Jan MacLean names, not Jill MacLean, so copies are catalogued under those bylines; Wikipedia says she used pen names so that her husband's congregation would not know the chaplain's wife wrote romances. The children's novels are the books published under her real name.
