About John Flanagan

John Flanagan (1944-2026) was an Australian author of fantasy fiction for young readers, creator of the Ranger's Apprentice and Brotherband series. He was born in Sydney on 22 May 1944 and died on 7 February 2026 from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Flanagan attended Waverley College on a scholarship and began as an advertising copywriter at J Walter Thompson in the 1960s, later becoming a creative director. He then spent about a decade creating and writing television sitcoms, co-writing Hey Dad..!, before returning to freelance copywriting in the late 1990s. Ranger's Apprentice began as short stories written for his son Michael. The first novel, The Ruins of Gorlan, was published in Australia in November 2004, and the main sequence ran through titles such as The Burning Bridge (2005), The Icebound Land (2005), Erak's Ransom (2007) and The Lost Stories (2011), followed by the Royal Ranger and Early Years spin-offs. Erak's Ransom was named Book of the Year for Older Children at Australia's 2008 book industry awards, and also took an International Success Award. The Brotherband series, nine books about young Skandian sailors, began with The Outcasts (2011) and ended with The Stern Chase (2022). He also wrote the Jesse Parker thrillers and the adult novel The Grey Raider (2015). His literary agency put combined sales of his books above 20 million copies.
