About Tui Sutherland

Tui T. Sutherland (born 1978) is a Venezuelan-born American children's author best known for Wings of Fire, the dragon fantasy series published by Scholastic since 2012.

She was born on 31 July 1978 in Caracas, Venezuela; her mother, who was from New Zealand, named her after the tūī bird. She lived for short spells in Asunción, Miami and Santo Domingo before moving to New Jersey during high school, and graduated from Williams College in 1998 with a degree in English literature, later adding an MA in art history. She worked as an editor at Grosset & Dunlap and HarperCollins before writing full time.

Her first solo novel, This Must Be Love (2004), retold A Midsummer Night's Dream. She has also written under several shared or personal pen names, including as part of the Erin Hunter team on Warriors and Seekers, as Heather Williams, Rob Kidd and Tamara Summers, and she wrote Against the Tide, the fifth Spirit Animals book. Wings of Fire began with The Dragonet Prophecy on 1 July 2012. The first arc continued with The Lost Heir, The Hidden Kingdom and The Dark Secret (all 2013) and The Brightest Night (2014); later arcs began with Moon Rising (2014) and The Lost Continent (2018), and the sixteenth book, The Hybrid Prince, followed in 2026. Graphic novel adaptations have appeared since 2018.

For collectors. The Scholastic first printing of The Dragonet Prophecy (2012) is the key book. Because the novels have been reissued many times and adapted as graphic novels, check that a copy is the original 2012 prose edition.
