About Bound to Stay Bound Books
Bound to Stay Bound Books is a family-owned library bindery in Jacksonville, Illinois, founded in January 1920 that prebinds new books in durable library bindings for school and public libraries; it is a binder and supplier to libraries rather than an original publisher.
Lawrence D. Sibert and William Suhy started the business as the New Method Book Bindery at 220 South Main Street, Jacksonville. The company traces its slogan to a mishap in which a hoist chain snapped while a wooden case of books for the Des Moines Public Library was being lowered; the case split, but the books came through almost unharmed, and a bystander's remark gave Lawrence Sibert the phrase. When the firm began prebinding new books for school and public libraries, those books became known as Bound to Stay Bound books, and the company took that name in 1970.
Lawrence Sibert helped found the Library Binding Institute, the binders' trade body, in 1935. Robert F. Sibert, a later long-serving president, is honoured in the American Library Association's Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal for children's nonfiction, administered by the Association for Library Service to Children. The company remains a third-generation family business in Jacksonville and offers libraries processing, novel sets and series alerts alongside its bindings.
