Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Quick answer

Who published the A Single Pebble 1956 hardback?
Hamish Hamilton, London, in 1956, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

The first British edition is Hamish Hamilton, London, 1956, a small book of 183 pages, about 19 cm tall. Knopf published the American edition in New York the same year with 181 pages, so the page count helps tell the London edition from the New York one. Later British issues are paperbacks and not firsts: Corgi (Transworld) in the 1960s and Panther in 1979. Heinemann Educational issued a school edition in 1964.

Publisher's practice

How Hamish Hamilton marked its first editions

  • The 1951 first UK edition of The Catcher in the Rye is bound in blue cloth lettered in silver, and its pictorial jacket was designed by Fritz Wegner.
