Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

In short

Quick answer

Who published the Akhnaton first edition?
Collins, London, in 1973, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

Christie's play about the pharaoh was first published by Collins in London in May 1973 (ISBN 0 00 211038 5, 157 pages). The Dodd, Mead edition from New York (ISBN 0 396 06822 7) is the American edition and should not be confused with it. The Collins first is a cloth hardback issued in a dust jacket; dealers offer it with both clipped and unclipped jackets, and an unclipped jacket is preferable. HarperCollins reissued the play as a facsimile hardback on 29 October 2009, so check the publisher's name and the date on the copyright page.

Publisher's practice

How Collins marked its first editions

  • Collins did not adopt any special method of marking first editions or first impressions, according to its statements to H. S. Boutell.
  • Collins said that when it issued a cheaper edition, the reverse of the title page recorded the date of the original edition and that of the cheap edition.
