How to identify this edition

Published by Constable in 1897, probably on 26 May, in yellow cloth lettered in red. The key point for the earliest state is the final leaf (p. [392]): in the first issue it is blank, while slightly later copies use it for an advertisement for Stoker's The Shoulder of Shasta. Some copies also have a publisher's catalogue bound in at the end; sources do not agree on what this means for priority, as Christie's has sold a copy with an eight-page catalogue as a first issue, so rely on the Shasta leaf. The yellow cloth soils and the spine browns easily, and many copies have been restored or rebound. The 1901 Constable paperback is an abridged text, about 15% shorter, and not a first.
