The first edition is the American Delacorte Press hardback of October 1985 (295 pages, $16.95), which also had a signed limited issue. The first British edition is the Jonathan Cape hardback, London, 1985 (ISBN 0-224-02847-2), 269 pages, in publisher's cloth and dust jacket. The page count (269 against 295) quickly separates the Cape edition from American copies. The first British paperback was Grafton in March 1987. Check whether the jacket has been price-clipped.
