First edition Hardback

Hoodoo-conjuration-witchcraft-rootwork (1970)

Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Publisher's practice

How Western Pub. Co marked its first editions

  • On Little Golden Books printed before about 1947, the edition is stated on the first pages.
  • From about 1947 to 1970, a single capital letter in the lower right corner of the last page, close to the spine, gives the printing: "A" is the first, "B" the second, and so on.
  • From 1971 to 1991, a row of letters appears on one of the first pages; the letter furthest to the left is the printing, so a first printing begins with "A".
  • From 1991 a printing year in Roman numerals sits by the copyright notice; an "A" with it marks a first edition and an "R" a revised edition.
  • Number lines were only adopted in 2001.
  • The original 1942 Little Golden Books price was 25 cents.
