In short

Quick answer

Who published the Human Compatible 2019 hardback?
Allen Lane, London, in 2019, in hardback.
What decides the price
  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

Allen Lane, the Penguin hardback imprint, published the British edition on 8 October 2019, the same day Viking issued the American hardback (ISBN 9780525558613). The two are easy to separate: the UK hardback has ISBN 9780241335208 and the subtitle 'AI and the Problem of Control', while the Viking edition is subtitled 'Artificial Intelligence and the Problem of Control'. Later UK formats are Penguin paperbacks (from 2020, and a 2023 reissue with ISBN 9780141987507), so a Penguin paperback is not the first.
