What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Quick answer

Who published the Manhattan Transfer first edition?
Harper & Brothers, New York, in 1925, in hardback.
Publisher's practice

How Harper & Brothers marked its first editions

Harper printed a two-letter code on the copyright page from 1912 until 1968. The first letter gives the month of printing and the second the year, so a code such as "D-Y" means April 1949.

The month letters run A (January) to M (December) with J skipped, so I is September and K is October.
