Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Publisher's practice

How H. Jenkins marked its first editions

  • Post-war first editions usually print the year on the copyright page as "First Published" followed by the date: Ring for Jeeves reads "First Published 1953" and Flashman reads "First Published 1969".
  • Before the war the firm claimed that its first editions were dated and its reprints marked, and some Wodehouse firsts carry the date on the title page instead, as Right Ho, Jeeves (1934) does in Roman numerals. Wodehouse collectors note the claim was not always kept, so check a bibliography.
  • A first printing of Flashman (1969) is bound in red cloth with silver lettering on the spine.
