Market value

What decides the price

  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

HarperCollins, London, in 1994, in hardback.
Identification

How to identify this edition

Not the true first: William Morrow, New York, published the American first in 1994 (ISBN 0688084915, 398 pages). The first British edition is the HarperCollins hardback of 1994, ISBN 0002236416, about 384 pages, in a dust jacket. HarperCollins issued the paperback in 1995 (ISBN 0006476589), which is not a first. Book Club Associates also issued a BCA hardback in Britain in 1994; check the title page and spine for the HarperCollins imprint to rule it out.

Publisher's practice

How HarperCollins marked its first editions

  • Harper & Brothers marked first editions with the words "First Edition" on the copyright page, a custom the firm confirmed in 1947.
  • From 1912 Harper & Brothers also printed a two-letter code on the copyright page, one letter for the month and one for the year of printing (M stands for 1912).
  • Where a printing line appears on the copyright page, the lowest number shows the printing, whatever order the numbers run in; a line with a 1 normally indicates a first printing.
  • Book club editions are a common trap: their jackets usually carry no price on the front flap, so a priced jacket is one of the first things to check.
