Publisher's practice

How Ladybird marked its first editions

  • The title-page date is not proof. From the late 1950s the date printed in the book is usually the date the title was first published, so a much later reprint can show the same year. Check the other points below before calling a copy a first.
  • Dust jackets before 1965. Books issued before 1965 were sold in dust jackets, so a pre-1965 first should have one. From 1965 jackets were dropped and books were issued in matt pictorial boards.
  • Logo. The open-winged flying ladybird was used up to 1961; from 1961 a closed-wing ladybird seen from above replaced it. A copy with the later logo cannot be from before 1961.
  • Decimal prices. A price printed in decimal currency means the copy was printed after decimalisation in 1971.
  • Tally numbers. Many books from the 1960s and 1970s carry a tally number, which collectors use to date a printing; the first edition of a title has its own known tally number.
