In short

Quick answer

Who published the Swing Time 2016 hardback?
Hamish Hamilton, London, in 2016, in hardback.
What decides the price
  • It is the first UK edition; the true first was published elsewhere.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Identification

How to identify this edition

Published in London by Hamish Hamilton, a Penguin imprint, on 15 November 2016 as a hardback, ISBN 9780241144152. The American first came from Penguin Press, New York, on the same day (ISBN 9781594203985), and Penguin also produced an export or international edition (9780735222472) and a UK trade paperback (9780241247310); none of these is the UK hardback first. Look for the Hamish Hamilton imprint on the title page and the earliest impression on the copyright page. The novel was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2017, so a cover or sticker mentioning that is a later copy.

Publisher's practice

How Hamish Hamilton marked its first editions

  • The 1951 first UK edition of The Catcher in the Rye is bound in blue cloth lettered in silver, and its pictorial jacket was designed by Fritz Wegner.
