Identification

How to identify this edition

This Winter first appeared on 5 November 2015 as an ebook-only novella from HarperCollins Children's Books (sold under the Harper Fire name), set in the world of Solitaire and following Tori and Charlie Spring. So the true first edition is the 2015 ebook (ISBN 978-0-00-814788-4), which has no physical form to collect. The first printed edition is the HarperCollins paperback of 15 October 2020 (ISBN 978-0-00-841293-7, 144 pages), the earliest copy a collector can hold. A Harper Fire paperback with a new ISBN (978-0-00-865931-8, 101 pages) followed in 2024, and an American edition appeared in 2023, so check the ISBN on the back cover and copyright page.

Publisher's practice

How HarperCollins marked its first editions

  • Harper & Brothers marked first editions with the words "First Edition" on the copyright page, a custom the firm confirmed in 1947.
  • From 1912 Harper & Brothers also printed a two-letter code on the copyright page, one letter for the month and one for the year of printing (M stands for 1912).
  • Where a printing line appears on the copyright page, the lowest number shows the printing, whatever order the numbers run in; a line with a 1 normally indicates a first printing.
  • Book club editions are a common trap: their jackets usually carry no price on the front flap, so a priced jacket is one of the first things to check.
