What decides the price

  • It is the first edition, which is the one collectors want.
  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Publisher's practice

How Morrow marked its first editions

Morrow changed its method in 1973, so the publication year decides which rule applies. A US book club copy can usually be told from the trade edition by several signs: a jacket with no price, a small blind stamp (often a dot) pressed into the lower back board, and a smaller, more cheaply made book. A few Book of the Month Club jackets of the 1970s did show a price on the front flap, so check the other signs too.
