What decides the price

  • The original dust jacket carries much of the price for a book of this age; its condition matters as much as the book's.
  • Condition is graded separately for book and jacket, from Fine down to Poor.

Publisher's practice

How BCA marked its first editions

BCA books are book club editions made by arrangement with the trade publisher. They are not first editions of the text, even when they appeared alongside the trade first; collectors want the trade publisher's own first printing in its priced jacket.

  • The imprint. The title page or its verso names BCA or Book Club Associates with the trade publisher, in wording such as "This edition published 1992 by BCA by arrangement with Hodder & Stoughton" or "Book Club Associates in association with Jonathan Cape".
  • No price. The jacket carries no printed price. A trade first in its original jacket has one, so an unpriced jacket that is not clipped points to the club edition.
  • The CN number. BCA books carry a club catalogue code beginning "CN" (for example CN 6975), often in place of an ISBN. It is not an ISBN and does not identify the trade edition.
