About Archway
Archway, also called Archway Paperbacks, was a paperback imprint of the New York publisher Simon & Schuster. It published fiction for young readers and teenagers, including series thrillers in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Archway's books appeared within Simon & Schuster's long-running paperback business. That business goes back to Pocket Books, which Robert de Graff launched in June 1939 with Richard L. Simon, M. Lincoln Schuster and Leon Shimkin. Pocket entered young adult publishing in 1945, and Simon & Schuster acquired it in 1966.
Under the Archway name the imprint published early books in R. L. Stine's Fear Street series, which began in 1989 with The New Girl. Bibliographic citations record The Overnight (1989) and The Wrong Number (1990) as Archway Paperbacks editions. From August 1992 to June 1993 Archway also issued the Ultra-Thriller books, a spin-off from The Hardy Boys Casefiles and Tom Swift. Later reissues of Fear Street, such as the 2006 edition of The New Girl, appeared under Simon & Schuster's Simon Pulse imprint.
