About Candlewick Press

Candlewick Press is an American children's publisher based in Somerville, Massachusetts. It was set up in 1991 as the US sister company of Walker Books, the London children's publisher founded in 1978 by Sebastian Walker, Amelia Edwards and Wendy Boase.

Walker's success with the Where's Wally? books (Where's Waldo? in the US) paid for the move into the American market. Candlewick opened in May 1991 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with six staff, and its first list came out in spring 1992. Sources therefore give either 1991 or 1992 as the founding year. The company later moved to Somerville.

Candlewick's best-known author is Kate DiCamillo. It published Because of Winn-Dixie (a Newbery Honor book), the Newbery Medal winners The Tale of Despereaux and Flora & Ulysses, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Other notable titles include M. T. Anderson's National Book Award winner The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Jon Klassen's I Want My Hat Back and Caldecott-winning This Is Not My Hat, Lucy Cousins's Maisy books, and the Judy Moody series by Megan McDonald and Peter H. Reynolds. Its imprints include Templar Books, Big Picture Press, Candlewick Studio and MIT Kids Press.

Trustbridge Global Media bought the Walker Books Group, including Candlewick, in May 2020.
