About Deutsch

André Deutsch Ltd is a London publishing house founded by the Hungarian-born publisher André Deutsch (1917 to 2000), which began trading in 1952 and was known for publishing major British, American and Commonwealth writers; the name is now an imprint of Welbeck.

Deutsch, born in Budapest, first set up the firm Allan Wingate towards the end of the Second World War, but was pushed out by one of its directors after a few years. He then launched André Deutsch Ltd, with the editor Diana Athill as a founding director in 1952 (some accounts date the founding to 1951). The house published Jack Kerouac, Norman Mailer, Philip Roth, John Updike, Margaret Atwood, V. S. Naipaul, Wole Soyinka and Ogden Nash.

In 1984 Deutsch agreed to sell the business to Tom Rosenthal, formerly of Secker & Warburg, with the two running it jointly until Deutsch reached 70, when Rosenthal was to take full control. Carlton Publishing Group bought André Deutsch from Video Collection International in 2000, and Carlton was itself acquired by Welbeck Publishing Group in April 2019.

How to identify Deutsch first editions

What to look for

1950s to 1960s

  • British houses commonly printed "First published" with the year on the back of the title page and listed any later printings below it. If later printings are listed, the copy is not a first printing.
  • UNVERIFIED: no source checked here gives Deutsch's own copyright-page wording, so confirm a Deutsch first against a bibliography of the author.
  • UNVERIFIED: a dealer has offered a Deutsch first impression of Naipaul's A House for Mr Biswas (1961) in a jacket from a later printing, so check that the jacket matches the book.

1970s to 1990s

  • If a number line appears, the lowest number shown is the printing; a "1" means a first printing.
  • Book club copies are common in Britain. Book Club Associates (BCA, also issued as Guild Publishing in the mid-1980s) produced copies close in look to the trade edition. Signs are no price on the jacket, a small blind stamp near the lower right corner of the back board, and a smaller size or cheaper paper.
