About Dutton Children's Books

Dutton Children's Books is an American children's publisher, now part of Penguin Young Readers at Penguin Random House, that grew out of E. P. Dutton and has published A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh books in the United States since the 1920s.

Its parent company began in 1852 when Edward Payson Dutton opened a bookselling business in Boston, which soon took up children's literature. The firm opened a New York branch in 1864 and moved its headquarters there in 1869. E. P. Dutton issued the American edition of Winnie-the-Pooh on 14 October 1926, the same day as Methuen's London edition, and Judy Blume's Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great in 1972.

Dutton's children's list has won major awards: Newbery Medals for Shen of the Sea (1926), Amos Fortune, Free Man (1951) and Ellen Raskin's The Westing Game (1979), a Newbery Honor for Jean Craighead George's My Side of the Mountain (1960), Caldecott Medals for The Funny Little Woman (1973) and Paul O. Zelinsky's Rapunzel (1998), and the 2006 Printz Award for John Green's Looking for Alaska.

E. P. Dutton was bought by the Dutch publisher Elsevier in 1975, sold in 1981 to the buyout firm Dyson-Kissner-Moran, and acquired in 1985 by New American Library. When Penguin bought NAL in 1986, Dutton Children's Books was split off as a separate imprint. It passed into Penguin Random House when Penguin and Random House merged in 2013.
