About HQN Books
HQN Books is a romance imprint of Harlequin, launched in August 2004 to publish standalone, mainstream romance novels rather than numbered series titles. Harlequin announced the imprint in 2003, placing it under its New York executive editor Tracy Farrell, with a plan of two or three original titles a month, mostly as mass market paperbacks and occasionally in hardback or trade paperback.
The debut list paired Diana Palmer's hardback Renegade with Carly Phillips's mass market Hot Stuff, and both made national bestseller charts. By 2022 HQN was described as Harlequin's flagship romance imprint.
Harlequin itself has been part of HarperCollins since 2014 and is based in Toronto. In October 2022 Harlequin announced that HQN would be renamed Canary Street Press, a name taken from Toronto's Canary District; the new imprint began publishing in February 2023 with Never Never by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher.
Because HQN only began in 2004, any HQN copy of a romance first issued before then (for example titles from the 1980s or 1990s) is a later reissue, not a first edition.
