About J.P. Tarcher
J. P. Tarcher is an American publisher of self-help, personal growth and New Age books, founded in Los Angeles in 1973 by Jeremy P. Tarcher and now an imprint of Penguin Random House.
Jeremy Tarcher (1932 to 2015) began in the early 1960s packaging books for celebrities such as Phyllis Diller and Johnny Carson, and turned to psychology and spirituality after a retreat at the Esalen Institute. His list became known for Betty Edwards's Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, Marilyn Ferguson's The Aquarian Conspiracy, W. Brugh Joy's Joy's Way and the English translation of Heinrich Harrer's Seven Years in Tibet. Dan Millman's Way of the Peaceful Warrior was first published by Tarcher in 1980.
Putnam bought the company in 1991 and moved its offices to New York. Tarcher himself led the imprint until early 1996, when Joel Fotinos became publisher. Later bestsellers included Ultramarathon Man, and its list also carries Think & Grow Rich. In 2015 it merged with its sister imprint Perigee to form TarcherPerigee, which acquired Amber-Allen Publishing, publisher of The Four Agreements, in 2024 and renamed itself Tarcher in 2025.
