About McGraw-Hill

McGraw-Hill is an American publisher of textbooks, professional and technical books, created when James H. McGraw and John A. Hill merged their book departments into the McGraw-Hill Book Company in 1909.

McGraw had started in trade journals in 1888 and Hill formed the Hill Publishing Company in 1902. After the 1909 book merger, the rest of their two businesses combined in 1917 as the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. In 1964 the remaining companies merged into McGraw-Hill, Inc., which bought the credit rating agency Standard & Poor's in 1966.

Alongside its educational list McGraw-Hill issued general books, including Marshall McLuhan's Understanding Media (1964) and Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire (1968). It also bought Osborne Books, a computer book publisher, in 1979.

In 2013 the parent sold its education arm to Apollo Global Management and renamed itself McGraw Hill Financial, becoming S&P Global in 2016. The education business, now McGraw Hill and based in Columbus, Ohio, was sold by Apollo to Platinum Equity in 2021 and listed on the New York Stock Exchange in July 2025.
