Zackheim joined Penguin in September 2001 after seven years at HarperCollins, and in 2003 he also launched the conservative imprint Sentinel. Portfolio publishes on technology, economics, entrepreneurship, biography and investigative journalism, and describes itself as non-fiction publishing for ambitious people.

Other current authors include Morgan Housel, Cal Newport, Annie Duke, Nir Eyal, Katy Milkman and Ethan Mollick.
In 2010 Penguin extended the brand to Britain as Portfolio UK. Zackheim remains the imprint's president and publisher.
