About Princeton University Press

Princeton University Press is an independent, nonprofit academic publisher in Princeton, New Jersey, founded in 1905 and closely tied to Princeton University, with more than 10,000 titles in print.

It was started by Whitney Darrow, a recent Princeton graduate who managed the Alumni Weekly, with $1,000 from the university trustee and publisher Charles Scribner II. It began as a printer above a drugstore on Nassau Street and was reincorporated as a nonprofit in 1910. Around 1911 it moved into a building given by Scribner and designed by his brother-in-law Ernest Flagg, modelled on the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp. Its first book was a 1912 edition of John Witherspoon's Lectures on Moral Philosophy.

Landmark titles include Albert Einstein's The Meaning of Relativity (1922), his first book published in the United States, and John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern's Theory of Games and Economic Behavior (1944), which helped found game theory. The Press publishes The Papers of Thomas Jefferson (first volume 1950), The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein and the Bollingen Series, which the Bollingen Foundation gave it in 1969.

It has offices in Oxford and Beijing, and Christie Henry, its director since 2017, is the first woman to lead it. Island Press became one of its imprints in January 2026.
