About S. Chand
S. Chand is an educational publisher based in New Delhi. Shyam Lal Gupta founded it in 1939 in a side street of Chandni Chowk, and it is now the listed company S Chand and Company Limited, which publishes school and college textbooks.
Gupta (1912 to 1989) wanted to give Indian writers a voice and to sell textbooks by Indian authors to students at affordable prices. The firm's first book was a Textbook of Physical Chemistry by Bahl and Tuli. It set up its own printing press in 1960 and became S. Chand & Co. Private Limited in 1970. In 1971 it won exclusive publication rights to certain Wren & Martin English grammar titles, and in 1976 it entered the school textbook market. Gupta received the Padma Shri in 1969 and represented Bihar in the Rajya Sabha from 1972 to 1978.
Its long-selling textbooks include B. L. Theraja's Electrical Technology, V. K. Mehta's Principles of Physics, R. D. Madan's Advanced Inorganic Chemistry and R. S. Aggarwal's reasoning guides. The group bought Vikas Publishing House in 2012 and took stakes in New Saraswati House in 2014 and Chhaya Prakashani in 2016. It became a public limited company in September 2016 and listed on the stock market in 2017. Himanshu Gupta is managing director.
