About Times Books

Times Books is a New York book imprint owned by The New York Times Company, which grew out of the newspaper's 1969 purchase of the Chicago publisher Quadrangle Books and has been licensed to other publishers since 1984.

Quadrangle Books had been founded in Chicago in 1959 by Michael Braude. After the Times bought it, the business traded as The New York Times Book Company and took the name Times Books in 1977. In 1984 the newspaper, deciding to leave publishing to publishers, licensed the name to Random House for fifteen years, with a right of first refusal on material that had appeared in the Times. Peter Osnos ran the imprint from 1991 to 1996, and in autumn 1999 it was moved into Random House's Crown group.

A notable title from the Random House years is Barack Obama's memoir Dreams from My Father, published by Times Books on 18 July 1995. When the licence lapsed the Times took the trademark back in January 2000, and Random House folded the remaining staff and contracted titles into Crown. Later that year the Times licensed the name to Henry Holt and Company, part of Holtzbrinck's Macmillan.
