About Chronicles of Barsetshire

The Chronicles of Barsetshire are six novels by Anthony Trollope set in the imaginary English county of Barsetshire and its cathedral town of Barchester, dealing with the clergy and gentry. Trollope conceived The Warden after visiting Salisbury in 1852, and Longman published it in 1855, followed by Barchester Towers (Longman, 1857) and Doctor Thorne (Chapman & Hall, 1858). The last three were serialised first and then issued in volumes by Smith, Elder: Framley Parsonage (1861) and The Small House at Allington (1864) after runs in The Cornhill, and The Last Chronicle of Barset (1867). The series was not planned as such; Chapman & Hall gathered the six as the Chronicles of Barset in 1878.
